Why You Should Get Involved

 1. Make a Significant Difference

Waving signs in protest or standing on the side of a road with a bucket collecting money are not the only ways to make a difference. A better way to make a difference is to improve the effectiveness of worthwhile organizations! Improved effectiveness means donations go further and more people can be helped both now and in the future.

 2. Gain Hands-On Work Experience

Most internships and part-time work is boring, tedious, unrewarding, and not challenging. 180 Degrees is different. We give you the opportunity to get experience that employers value. You will be working on real projects with real clients and will be able to exercise real leadership!

 3. Get Professional Training

180 Degrees has worked with leading top-tier consulting firms to develop our own tailored consulting methodology and consulting training program. You will receive professional consulting training from 180 Degrees, often in conjunction with representatives from McKinsey, BCG, Bain, or other professional services firms.

 4. Obtain Valuable Life Skills

You will develop numerous transferable skills, such as teamwork, problem solving, oral and written communication, creative thinking, client management, and cross-cultural communication.

 5. Work Directly with Amazing Non-Profits and Social Enterprises

You will experience first hand the fantastic work that many organizations are doing.

 6. Experience Being a Consultant

What better way to learn about consulting and decide if you want to pursue a career in consulting than to experience it first-hand!

 7. Solve Important Challenging Problems

Few things are more rewarding than working in a team to develop solutions to difficult problems.

 8. Socialize with Like-Minded People

Because work is more fun when it doesn’t feel like work.

“I do not think there is a better value-for-time volunteering experience than being a 180 Degrees Consultant. It hits multiple birds with one stone – work experience, making a difference, and professional training. Why do these things separately when you can do them simultaneously?” – Nat Ware (Founder & CEO)

Join the Global Leadership Team

The Global Leadership Team is the body that leads and manages the work of 180 Degrees Consulting around the world.

This includes supporting existing 180 Degrees branches, helping new branches to get established, facilitating collaboration between branches, ensuring consulting quality control, measuring the social impact of 180 Degrees worldwide, and making crucial strategic decisions about the future of the organization.

If you want to help expand the social impact of 180 Degrees around the world, we encourage you to apply to join the Global Leadership Team.

Start a Branch

180 Degrees is a highly ambitious organization. We want to grow so that we can help more non-profits and social enterprises to achieve their full potential, and so we can train more university students to become great social impact leaders! There is a massive need for the services that 180 Degrees provides.

We want you to help us expand our impact! If you are based at a university where there is not currently a 180 Degrees branch, we encourage you to consider applying to start a branch. We’re looking for talented, entrepreneurial, hard-working and committed people with the right motivation!

Starting a branch is a very competitive process as we want to maintain high quality. We want to ensure all branch founders are exceptionally talented, very committed, and have the right motivation. Less than 15% of applications to start a 180 Degrees branch are ultimately approved. For those considering applying, it is important to know that while starting a branch is exceptionally rewarding it is also a significant time commitment. We expect at least 10-15 hours per week dedicated to 180 Degrees. The good news is that if you are approved to start a branch, we’ll support you every step of the way. You will have access to our extensive consulting and marketing resources, be trained in our proven processes, have access to IT support, get advice on how to best run a branch, be invited to our leadership summits, and be able to use our custom built consulting management platform that we call Compass. You will also be a part of the exciting, innovative and growing 180 Degrees global community.

The first step in the process is to express interest by filling in the following form. If we are impressed by your application, we will then be in contact with you regarding next steps. This typically includes an in-person or online interview.

Become a 180 Impact Fellow

Program Overview

Each year, 180 Degrees Consulting facilitates an Impact Fellowship. We embed a group of 20 consultants into the most promising social enterprises and nonprofits in a developing country, and help them solve their most significant organizational challenges. Our Impact Fellows engage clients well before arriving in the country – project calls are conducted remotely for several months, culminating in one week of on-site client meetings in the field. Impact Fellows will have the opportunity to interact with in-country social sector leaders, and work with them to scale their operations. Our vision is to serve as a force multiplier for impact in the developing world.

This year, the Impact Fellowship will be held from August 12-20, 2017 in Johannesburg, South Africa. 180 Degrees Consulting has reserved 15 slots for current members of our organization and 5 slots for current professional management consultants. We will be seeking fellows from every country in the world. The Impact Fellowship is an opportunity to form lifelong bonds with some of the best consultants in our organization, and an opportunity to network with other young people passionate about the social sector.

Program Projects

Impact Fellows will be distributed into teams of 4-5 consultants during the program. Each team will be assigned a client. Projects for individual clients are being scoped at this time, and will be finalized shortly after application decisions are made. Our client list for Impact Fellows 2017 includes the following organizations.

  1. WESSA – The leading implementer of high-impact environmental and conservation initiatives in South Africa
  2. Trebene – A cashmere fashion retailer dedicated to ethical trade and the humane treatment of animals
  3. Soy Lites – A soy candle manufacturer dedicated to making eco-friendly and sustainable products
  4. Enke Make your Mark – A leadership development program & incubator for youth-led social impact projects
  5. Kliptown Youth Program – A youth program focused on economic empowerment for the children of Kliptown
  6. Nanga Vhutshilo – A youth program focused on early development in one of Soweto’s most vulnerable communities

Program Itinerary

In addition to working with our South African clients, Impact Fellows will gain broader insight into the South African social sector through a variety of educational experiences and workshops. These include a visit to the Apartheid History Museum, a tour of Soweto, a workshop on human-centered consulting, a workshop on Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment, and an immersion experience discovering business challenges and opportunities in informal settlements.

We will also provide the option of a unique safari tour of Pilanesberg National Park and Game Reserve. Interested Impact Fellows will add an additional night to their program experience and drive to Pilanesberg, where they will have an opportunity to see a diverse variety of African wildlife (e.g. the African lion, the African elephant, the African leopard, Cape buffalo, the rhinoceros, and more). This portion of the Impact Fellows 2017 program is optional – if fellows choose to participate, there will be an additional fee (please see our program costs section).

To take a deeper look at our current itinerary, please see below for the approved schedule. Slight changes to this schedule may occur due to partner availability.
